Take my song, please!

If you take an interest at all in music, you’re aware of the hoops consumers have had to jump through to get a song they can listen to on their own terms. Thanks to the bully tactics of the labels, you are often told how many times you can listen to it, on what device and only while you’re paying a subscription fee.

There’s alternatives. I purchase music used on eBay. This provides a better cost to me, and it keeps any extra money out of the labels’ hands. Why help fund the entity that is stripping my rights? I must digress, however. One of the alternatives I wanted to bring to your attention today is the artist that actually wants you to have their music… at no cost to you… for free…

Another thing the labels have embraced is creating music that follows a strict pattern. Bands sound the same, almost as if they’re clones of their predecessors. It’s easy to get tired of the same dribble that they produce. If you spend some time browsing the sites that I’m going to provide, you’ll not come across a band that has had the personality sucked out of them. These bands are making music on their own terms, and while not always music that I’d consider great, at least it’s fresh and new!

Jamendo.com is one such spot on the web that I found where I can find a brand, preview the music and download the album(as a torrent) without paying a dime, if I so choose. Most recently, I found Brad Sucks!, a one man band with a highly polished electronic sound. I liked the album so much that I went to his site and purchased the album. I paid as much as I would have paid for an album from a music label. I did this because I appreciated Brad’s music. I didn’t have to, as I already had the album. This is truly “rewards based” sales.

Another site I’ve used is Stage.fm. This seems to be more mainstream, and it also seems to have lowered the bar for what gets posted(bringing it to the masses). You’ll download more stuff that should have never seen the light of day, but you will still walk away with some jewels.

I’ll be posting more links to music sites as time progresses, but the purpose of this post is mainly to let you know that free music is out there. You can find it without my help.

If you download Brad’s album, tell him I said thanks for the great music!
