Now accepting applications for my entourage

I’m going to record an album.
I have no doubt that it is going to be a really bad album, but I don’t think I have a choice in the matter.
I had convinced myself that I was past the age where things like recording your first album occured.
Then I read about Jonathan.
I’ve read about plenty of people my age or older that have released indie albums. Actually, I’ve bought a lot of them. Brad Sucks, MC Frontalot, Optimus Rhyme… the more obscure and unknown, the better. In spite of these success stories, I still thought of something like this as an endeavor that required you to start earlier in your life.
Enter Jonathan Coulton. Jonathan was a cubicle coder for years. At the age of 36, he told his wife that he was going to quit his job and become a rockstar. You can read how it worked out in the link above or at his site.
Once I read the article and his site, I realized two things that I guess come close to equaling an epiphany. First, it didn’t really matter at what age I attempted this. I don’t want to try to actually sell them. I just want to make one. Secondly, I realized that the reason I shied away from anything like this previously is because I didn’t really have a genre to embrace. Although I like listening to a lot of different types of music, I can’t picture myself writing any of it. Between my apathy and my lack of angst, I really don’t have a lot of things to say. Finding the nerdcore and geekrock genres made me realize that it didn’t matter what in the hell I sang about. With the internet, I could find people that could relate if I sang about my affection for wool socks.
I’ve got to put the studio back together, since it was disassembled for the purpose of running new electrical and plumbing during the kitchen remodel. After it’s together, I’ll get started, so keep your eye on the top 40 pop charts.
You might just see “Baby got wool socks” on it’s way to the top slot.
