If I wanted that type of performance, I would have installed Windows

by schwim on May.31, 2008, under Software

I installed Fedora 9 tonight.

Shortly after, I replaced my Fedora 7 install.

Gone are the days of out of the box successful networking.  Where any OS would recognize that you are connected to a network, Fedora now requires you to set up your network, much like Fedora 2.  Also, you can now welcome the arrival of the Vista-esque oversized graphical icons and laggy desktop performance.

I think we have witnessed Fedora’s jumping of the shark.

Just like gay pride day,

by schwim on May.26, 2008, under Miscellaneous

but nobody has to decide who’s the pitcher and who’s the catcher.

Today was geek pride day. Although I should have celebrated by building a battle bot, memorizing LOTR, increasing my WoW character a level or disassembling my DNA, I took the family to a craft show.  My wife got to visit with her friend and I got to take the bug out for a spin.  As an added bonus, I got two(2) latte fraps.

I’m not a very good geek.

For instance, there may be a man hidden in his closet with a mac 10 right this very minute…

Anybody that has read some of my past politically geared posts know that I don’t care who we end up with as our next president.  You probably also know that for the most part, I don’t even know the names of most of the hopefuls.

I am however, a sucker for light hearted humor, so any news I do get in regards to the political arena is in this genre.

Take for instance, Hillary’s refusal to bow out after repeated runner-up positions.  When asked why, she stated that she had to stay in the running in preparation for when Obama gets gunned down just like Robert Kennedy.

Somebody should check her Rolodex for an S. Sirhan.

Thanking you very much for putting your honky ass back into the motorcar.

Michael Hollick feels he has been cheated. He only pulled six figures for a voice over in a game that has made millions. He was the voice behind the main character in Grand Theft Auto 4.

Now don’t go thinking that I don’t feel compassion for people like Michael. I do. Just not because of his money situation.

Don’t be evil…. consistently

by schwim on May.21, 2008, under Miscellaneous

Remember when Google’s motto was “Don’t be Evil“? Well, Google long ago turned that into lip service, but at least upheld a facade of a corporate entity driven by do-gooders and white knights.

Take their latest stand for all that is good.

Protecting you from yourself since 1975

by schwim on May.20, 2008, under MPAA & RIAA, Projects, Software

Customers using the Microsoft Windows Media Center operating system found themselves unable to record certain shows on the NBC Network. No official response was initially given. The issue kept gaining steam until MS finally acknowledged that it was blocking the content.

They state that they were following the “regulations” set forth by the FCC. If that is the case, then why is DirecTV, Tivo and every other DVR system able to record the same shows that WMC can not?

It seems that I sent out some spam today. A lot. So far, I’ve received over 3,000 bounced messages from various spam protection services and mail servers telling me that my message can’t be delivered. Assuming that around ten percent of the messages are being returned, it seems that over 30,000 messages have gone out with my name attached to them.

Ok, I’m just trying to impress you. I’m actually a (repeat) victim of backscatter spam. Spambots have randomly selected my email from millions of prospective winners. Then, they attached my email address to what will likely total tens of thousands of emails. (continue reading…)

Take my life, please!

by schwim on May.18, 2008, under Miscellaneous

Contrary to what Alanis Morissette would have you believe, having it rain on your wedding day is not ironic. In fact, pretty much no scenario she proposes in her song is ironic. At best, it could be defined as bad luck. I would have hoped that had I been in her position, my band mates, producer, label, friends or family would have told me this, saving me from saying so, but I digress. Let me get back to the topic at hand.

There was nothing good on, anyways.

Woman missing for 42 years was found dead.  Sitting in front of the television.  In her house.

It’s always in the last place you look.

But I view it for the articles!

“Will the passenger into transvestites and feet please report to the front desk?”

Had I been asked about the odds of hearing that over a PA at an airport mere months ago, I would have predicted it to be nil. However, having once again overestimated my fellow Americans, it seems that I need to reevaluate the algorithm I use to determine the spinelessness of my countrymen.

Now that the United States government is sure that you will allow the stripping of your rights without questioning or refusing, they have really gone to town. One of the latest revocations is the data on your laptop. They are now able to search any electronic device you bring to the airport without cause. I know, I could have skipped the “without cause”, since they dropped that on a global level a couple of years ago.
