Forgive him, for he’s a complete idiot.

Everyone has needs in their life that rank higher than others.  We do things in life to meet those needs since they’re so important to us.  Other needs often go unmet because of them, in fact.

If I had to rate my two most important personal needs, I would choose the following:

1) Broadband internet:  This is both for my work and play.  My job requires constant data transfer(hosting & design).  My play centers around it as well(Q3 servers, etc).

2) A garage: If I’m at home and I’m not playing, then I’m either working on the house or I’m working on a car.  It’s the other two things I do when I’m at home, excluding sleep and bathroom breaks.  If you’ve looked in my gallery, then you have an idea of the type of work I’m talking about.

So there you go.  Broadband internet and a workspace.

Five years ago, I chose to buy a house in the woods that had no garage or broadband internet access.

Programming & Scripting guidlines

by schwim on Oct.14, 2008, under Humorous, Software

Found this on the web today.  Luckily, I already subscribe the the majority of these:

1. Thou shalt not worry about bugs.
Bugs in your software are actually special features.

2. Thou shalt not fix abort conditions.
Your user has a better chance of winning state lottery than getting the same abort again.

3. Thou shalt not handle errors.
Error handing was meant for error prone people, neither you or your users are error prone.

4. Thou shalt not restrict users.
Don’t do any editing, let the user input anything, anywhere, anytime. That is being very user friendly.

5. Thou shalt not optimize.
Your user are very thankful to get the information, they don’t worry about speed and efficiency.

6. Thou shalt not provide help.
If your users can not figure out themselves how to use your software then they are too dumb to deserve the benefits of your software anyway.

7. Thou shalt not document.
Documentation only comes in handy for making future modifications. You made the software perfect the first time, it will never need mods.

8. Thou shalt not hurry.
Only the cute and the mighty should get the program by deadline.

9. Thou shalt not revise.
Your interpretation of specs was correct, you know the users’ requirements better than they do.

10. Thou shalt not share.
If other programmers needed some of your code, they should have written it themselves.

I’m still outraged by everything you do

by schwim on Oct.04, 2008, under Miscellaneous

as a society, I’m just currently too tired to write about it.  My latest project is in the works.  The loft layout disappears in favor of a bedroom that you can’t see from the living room.

Lofts are cool:

1) If you’re 20 and single.
2) If you think you live in a movie set in New York

But if you’re a middle 30′s parent of a child that likes to watch Dora the Explorer and Hannah Montana at 7:30 in the morning on a weekend, it is not the ideal floorplan.

Don’t worry, as soon as I can stay awake after work, I’ll resume telling you everything you’re doing wrong.  I will also throw in my standard dash of derision at no extra charge.
