Are you dead yet? How about now? Now?

Well, it seems that in spite of news channels and educated tweets predicting the opposite, The swine flu was kind of a bust :(

Psych! It seems that a single person in Denmark has a case of the virus that is resistant to medication. Imagine that. A virus that resists treatment. Doctors stated that this man seems to be the only human being alive with the more resistant strain of the virus. Of course, they’re not contemplating about whether the anomaly lies with the patient, they’re assuming that a super-virus has developed.

Currently, Fox News is working on what to call a one-man virus outbreak that will still grab headlines.

I voted for “mandemic”.

    Send him to Guantanamo.
Oooooo! Better idea! Make him a citizen and send him to Congress with the rest of the swine who generate pork! (Obtuse? …. okay.)

Despite restrictions being relaxed in Oz, and health officials stating they will only target treatment at “vulnerable” people (the elderly, infants and those with other serious conditions), the media here are STILL beating up the story for all it’s worth. Yesterday’s headline, “Killer Flu Claims Fifth Victim” is a case in point, despite all five victims being people with other serious illnesses and exactly the kind of people you’d expect to be at risk.

I read yesterday that in the same period that about 150 people worldwide died from swine flu (or its complications), around 40,000 people died from regular seasonal flu (or its complications). Even saying “regular” flu is deceptive – it’s a different strain (mostly H3N2 this year. apparently, although there are a bunch of strains circulating) and it also has differing effects in differing people. To say that the media frenzy is ridiculous is to do an injustice to the word ridiculous. (Aside: Can you imagine this … “H3N2 vs. H1N1 – the grudge match you’ve been waiting for. The seasonal veteran up against the new kid from Mexico. These two killer flu’s finally go head to head. See it live, 8pm central!”)

I know there were crazy conspiracy theories circulating about shareholders in the company that makes Tamiflu being people with connections – e.g. Don Rumsfeld – and somehow being linked to swine flu, but the media portrayal and the reality of swine flu are just so far removed from each other that I’m beginning to wonder if there isn’t really something “organised” pushing the story along.

Sometimes the actions of the news agencies almost force you to believe that there is an ulterior motive that we aren’t privy to.

While I won’t rule that out, my suspicions lean toward the fact that they’re a bunch of idiots that would shoot their mom for ratings.

Even if their mom didn’t deserve it.
